CreateOS Sandbox vs GitHub Codespaces

For people developing on a GitHub repository, Codespaces is the shortest path from a pull request to a ready editor. For agents that run code outside a repo context, for longer than 12 hours, or in many parallel forks, CreateOS Sandbox is the closer fit.

Pricing at a Glance

CreateOS rates verified 17 October 2026. GitHub Codespaces pricing as published on 17 October 2026. Rates billed per GB rather than per GiB, or as bundled sizes, are quoted as published rather than converted.

Where CreateOS Sandbox Fits Better

What CreateOS Sandbox brings to this matchup, with a plain note on where GitHub Codespaces has the edge.

No 12-hour running cap: a sandbox runs until you destroy or pause it.

Fork a paused sandbox, memory included, into parallel copies; Codespaces starts each codespace from the repo or a prebuild.

Not tied to a repository: create a sandbox from any image or template and exec into it.

Outbound allowlist enforced on the host; GitHub does not state an outbound policy for codespaces.

Where GitHub Codespaces is strong

Codespaces has the tightest GitHub integration available: one click from any repo or pull request into a dev-container-defined VM, with prebuilds, organisation policies and a free monthly allowance of 120 hours on GitHub Free and 180 on Pro.

Which to Pick

Pick CreateOS Sandbox if

  • Agent runs last more than 12 hours or are not tied to a repository.
  • You want to fork an environment into parallel attempts.
  • You need outbound traffic restricted.

Pick GitHub Codespaces if

  • Your code is on GitHub and people need a ready editor from a repo or pull request.
  • You want dev container configs and prebuilds to standardise environments.
  • You can live within the free monthly hours on a personal account.

Common Questions

How long can a GitHub codespace run?

A codespace has a maximum running lifetime of 12 hours and a default inactivity timeout of 30 minutes. A CreateOS sandbox has no lifetime cap, and idle auto-pause is something you opt into with a window from 60 seconds to 24 hours.

Do GitHub Codespaces offer GPU machines?

Not generally. GitHub ran a GPU machine type trial for selected customers, and it is not generally available. CreateOS Sandbox also has no GPU shapes, so neither fits GPU workloads.

Is CreateOS priced the same way as Codespaces?

No. Codespaces charges per core-hour with RAM bundled, $0.18 per hour for 2 cores, plus $0.07 per GB-month of storage. CreateOS prices vCPU and memory separately per second, at $0.03616363 per vCPU-hour and $0.01159025 per GiB-hour, so the cheaper option depends on your memory-to-CPU ratio.
