CreateOS Sandbox vs Sail
Pick Sail if you keep long-horizon or RL agents alive for days and want to pay only for CPU, memory and disk actually used, with nothing billed while they sleep. Pick CreateOS Sandbox if you need a named region, eu or us, SDKs in Go, C# or Java, or a ready desktop image for computer-use agents.
Pricing at a Glance
CreateOS rates verified 17 October 2026. Sail pricing as published on 17 October 2026. Rates billed per GB rather than per GiB, or as bundled sizes, are quoted as published rather than converted.
CreateOS Sandbox
- Compute
- $0.0362 /vCPU-hr
- Memory
- $0.0116 /GiB-hr
Sail
- Compute
- $0.0150 /vCPU-hr
- Memory
- $0.0080 /GiB-hr
Sail bills observed usage at $0.015 per used vCPU-hour, $0.008 per used GiB-hour of RAM and $0.0007 per GiB-hour of NVMe disk, plus a creation charge of $0.005 to $0.012 waived on Pro ($250 per month), as of 17 October 2026.
Where CreateOS Sandbox Fits Better
What CreateOS Sandbox brings to this matchup, with a plain note on where Sail has the edge.
Two named regions, eu and us; Sail does not publish regions for Sailboxes.
SDKs for Go, C# and Java (pre-1.0) in addition to TypeScript, Python and Rust.
A desktop:1 image with an XFCE desktop, Google Chrome and a computer-use API, ready for browser agents.
Where Sail is strong
Sail bills only observed use of CPU, memory and disk, with no runtime cap, and sleeping or paused time is not billed. Pause and fork keep memory, so a days-long, mostly idle agent is unusually cheap to keep alive, and the same account offers open-model inference.
Which to Pick
Pick CreateOS Sandbox if
- You need to tell a customer which region their data runs in.
- Your backend is in Go, C# or Java.
- You want a ready desktop image for computer-use agents.
Pick Sail if
- Your agents run for days and sit idle most of the time.
- You want inference and sandboxes from one vendor.
- You need up to 256 GiB of memory or 1 TiB of disk per box.
Head-to-Head Comparison
Every dimension side by side, checked on 17 October 2026 against each vendor's own docs and pricing pages. "Not published" means we could not find it on the vendor's pages, not that the feature is missing.
| Dimension | CreateOS Sandbox | Sail |
|---|---|---|
| Isolation | Firecracker micro-VM with its own guest kernel | Kernel-isolated Linux VM with root (vendor-stated); live-migrated a few times a day |
| Pause and resume | Saves disk, memory and CPU state; vCPU billing stops, memory and storage still bill | Pause and sleep save memory and filesystem; open connections survive up to 10 minutes |
| Fork | Forks a paused sandbox into many independent copies | Checkpoint, then start any number of copies with disk and memory |
| Outbound network default | Open with no rules; deny-by-default once any host, IP, CIDR or wildcard rule exists, enforced on the host outside the VM | Open; host allowlist, blocked hosts, no-egress and no-network modes, credential injection |
| Inbound access | Closed by default; opt-in HTTPS URL | Closed until a port is exposed; HTTPS URL with optional address allowlist |
| Largest size | 8 vCPU / 16 GB on Enterprise; 8 vCPU / 8 GB on Pro | 8 vCPU, up to 256 GiB memory and 1 TiB disk |
| Concurrency | 1 / 5 / 20 / 30 by plan (Free to Enterprise); paused sandboxes count | 100 on Self-Serve; 5,000 on Pro; custom on Enterprise |
| Session length | No cap; optional idle auto-pause from 60 s to 24 h, off by default | No fixed runtime limit (vendor-stated) |
| Billing | Per second: $0.03616363/vCPU-hr, $0.01159025/GiB-hr, $0.0001584/GB-hr storage; no egress fees, 50 GiB bandwidth budget per sandbox | Used vCPU $0.015/hour, used RAM $0.008/GiB-hour; sleep and pause not billed; Pro $250/month |
| SDKs and interfaces | TypeScript, Go, Python, Rust, C#, Java (all but TypeScript pre-1.0), CLI, MCP, REST | Python, TypeScript and Rust SDKs, CLI/TUI, HTTPS API, docs MCP |
Common Questions
What does Sail charge while a Sailbox is asleep?
Nothing for compute: Sail does not bill sleeping, paused, checkpointing or cold-starting time, and it charges only for vCPU, RAM and disk actually used while running. A paused CreateOS sandbox stops vCPU billing, but memory and storage still bill.
Do Sailboxes have latency spikes from live migration?
Sail says yes, as a stated trade-off: it live-migrates VMs a few times a day to raise utilisation, adding several seconds of latency each time. That suits background and long-horizon agents better than latency-sensitive interactive work.
Which is cheaper per vCPU, Sail or CreateOS Sandbox?
Sail, on list price. It charges $0.015 per used vCPU-hour and $0.008 per used GiB-hour, metered per second and billed per minute. CreateOS charges $0.03616363 per vCPU-hour and $0.01159025 per GiB-hour per second while running. Sail also adds a small creation charge outside Pro and Enterprise.
